Apply for Genghis Con 2015!
Thursday, December 18, 2014
Thank You!!
Thanks so much to everyone who took part in Genghis Con 2014 and made it our best show yet - we had a record turnout. We couldn’t ask for a better group of exhibitors, volunteers and the fantastic staff at the Lake Erie Building, plus everyone else who helped us along the way, like the Root, Barrio, CIA, Jakprints, Mahalls…
If you get a chance, be sure to check out our album of photos from the show on Facebook, taken by our buddy Yoshi Andrego at Turnstyle Films. Speaking of which, thanks to everyone who was able to come out to the Draw Hard / Root Hog or Die screening.
There’s still quite a while in between now and then, but we’re happy to say that the seventh annual Genghis Con will be held at the Lake Erie Building, November 29th, 2015. Mark your calendars and watch thegenghiscon.com for more details in the months to come. If you have any comments, questions or concerns, as always feel free to drop us a line - genghisconcleveland at gmail.
See you next year!

GENGHIS CON 2014 IS HAPPENING
GENGHIS CON 2014,
SUNDAY NOVEMBER 30TH
AT THE LAKE ERIE BUILDING
CLEVELAND, OHIO - Genghis Con, the Small Press and Underground Comics Convention, will be returning to Cleveland for its sixth year this November with some exciting changes. For the first time, Genghis Con will be held at the spacious Lake Erie Building (13000 Athens Avenue, Lakewood, Ohio 44107) from 2pm to 7pm on Sunday, November 30th. In addition to a new location, the show will be free to attend, dropping the admission charge of years past. The convention brings together the best and the brightest creators of the region for a day of celebrating comics and zines. The new Lakewood location promises a larger number of exhibitors than ever before.
With as much that is new, Genghis Con is still tied to its established tradition of showcasing the talented artists, writers, and cartoonists drawn from across the rust belt and beyond on the weekend after Thanksgiving. The focus continues to be placed squarely on the art and language of comics, visual storytelling, and all print media.
After a hallmark year in 2013, expect to see several of last year’s additions to the show continue in 2014. Genghis Con will again be held on Sunday, and the event will be open to the public from 2pm to 7pm. Local podcast Comics Are Go! will return to host an episode from the convention floor.
Moving Genghis Con to the West Side will cast a different light on the show while still embracing a distinctively “Cleveland” feel. The Lake Erie Building, also known as the Screw Factory, is an old automobile factory that has since become the home of artist studios and is an active exhibition space. Located near Madison and W117th, the Lake Erie Building is easily accessible by public transit and by car, with plenty of on-site parking. Beginning at 3pm, Barrio will have their award-winning food truck parked outside, serving gourmet tacos (and yes, plenty of vegetarian and vegan options will be available).
The festivities will begin on Saturday night, with a kickoff party at Mahall’s 20 Lanes (13200 Madison Ave, Lakewood, OH 44107 - within walking distance of the Lake Erie Building). Headlining this event will be a double-feature of comics documentaries: Root Hog or Die, about the 25 year career of cartoonist John Porcellino’s beloved self-published King Cat series; and Turnstyle Film's Draw Hard, which turns the camera on Cleveland cartoonist/illustrator John G. Both artists will be exhibiting at the convention on Sunday.
Admission to Genghis Con and the kickoff party will both be free. Visit thegenghiscon.com for further information. A growing list of guests and exhibitors can be found at genghisconcleveland.tumblr.com/exhibitors. Any artist interested in exhibiting is welcome to sign up for the waiting list found at genghisconcleveland.tumblr.com/exhibitors.

GENGHIS CON 2014! Same Day! New, Bigger Location! FREE Admission!
Genghis Con 2014 will be held on Sunday, November 30th at the Lake Erie Building - Registration Now Open!
For the past five years on Thanksgiving weekend, Genghis Con has been a touchstone event for comics and independent print media in the North East Ohio region. From Pittsburgh to Columbus to Chicago, the region's most prolific comics creators and zinesters have converged on Cleveland to share their stories and artwork, and help foster an environment for the open dialogue about the nature of comics, storytelling, and the small press print medium. Genghis Con 2014 is primed to be another exceptional year with a couple of major changes to the show.
Big Change #1: Genghis Con is moving! The sixth annual small press and independent comics convention will be held from 2pm-7pm on Sunday, November 30th, 2014 (Thanksgiving weekend) at The Lake Erie Building (AKA: The Screw Factory), 13000 Athens Ave, at the south end of Lakewood, Ohio. This means we'll have a ton of extra space for even more exhibitors.
Big Change #2: We're getting rid of the $5 charge to get in! Genghis Con will now be FREE to all who wish to attend, making it an even better way to spend your post-Thanksgiving Sunday!
We'd like to take this opportunity to thank The Beachland Ballroom for all the support and giving us such a great home to launch Genghis Con and help it develop over the past five years. We encourage everyone to continue to support them, and enjoy all the awesome things The Beachland has to offer!
Those comics and zine makers interested in Exhibiting Genghis Con 2014, please head over to this REGISTRATION FORM.
Moving to a bigger space and making the show free for attendees means we have to make another big change, and so we will be charging a minimal fee for tables this year- $25 for 3', $50 for 6' of space.
We're excited for another amazing year. Help us spread the word and don't forget to register!

Exhibitor News - Cancellations and Additions
Just a quick update - we've had a couple people have to cancel this weekend. Sadly, Ashley Gerst, Stephen Hines and Scott Hall are not going to be able to be there this Sunday.
The good news is that we've added Marc Sumerak, GeekCLE and Daniel McCloskey to the list! Though we'll miss Ashley, Stephen and Scott, there's still tons of great stuff to check out!
Be sure to check out our tumblr for more info on these and all the rest of our fine exhibitors. See you on Sunday!
Waterloo Contruction
As Genghis Con Day approaches, we wanted to let you know ahead of time that Waterloo Road, where the Beachland is located, has been under construction. It's been a long process and unfortunately it will not be finished before this Sunday. So, with that in mind, the best we can all do is just be prepared.
With that in mind, here's what the deal is: Waterloo is currently a one-way street, with the other side torn up and in the process of being rebuilt. After E 156th, all sidestreets off of Waterloo are closed until E 163rd. Luckily, the Beachland parking lot is still accessible to traffic. If the lot is full, there is more parking up the road to your right (across from E 162nd).
Beyond this, you can turn on E 163rd (signs for Waterloo detour) and try for curb-side parking on Trafalgar Ave or elsewhere in the neighborhood. The blocked sidestreets are semi-accessible from Trafalgar if you want to try for parking there. There is also a parking lot behind Arts Collinwood (on the corner of Waterloo and E 156th).
Following this detour will take you back to highway access. If you want to circle around, we recommend turning right onto E 156th from Trafalgar rather than left. If there are any problems, the number for the Beachland is (216) 383-1124.
See you soon!

CLEVELAND, OHIO- Now in its 5th year the Small Press Comics Convention, Genghis Con, returns to The Beachland Ballroom (15711 Waterloo Rd, Cleveland, Ohio) on Sunday, December 1st, starting at 2pm. The convention brings the best and the brightest of the region's independent comics scene together for a day of celebrating comics. This year also sees some exciting new additions to the show, including live panel discussions and performances by some of Cleveland's favorite musical acts.
Genghis Con has established the tradition of having a Small Press and Underground Comics Convention in Cleveland on Thanksgiving weekend that showcases the talented artists, writers, and cartoonists drawn from all over rust belt and beyond. The focus has always been, and always will be, on the art and language of comics and visual storytelling, and the print medium.
2013 brings with it a handful of changes to the show to go along with the usual comics and self-published goodness you would expect from Genghis Con. The show this year will be held on Sunday, and doors open to the public at 2pm. During this convention, local podcast Comics Are Go! will be hosting a series of panel discussions that you won't want to miss.
The convention floor closes at 7pm, but that doesn't mean the fun is over. Directly after the main event, the Beachland Ballroom and Tavern will host a concert showcasing Cleveland's diverse musical talents. Performing will be the hard rockers All Dinosaurs, experimental vocalist Uno Lady, and hip hop come-uppers Smoke Noises (Smoke Screen + Ghost Noises).
The Beachland Ballroom is the ideal setting for Genghis Con. Much like The Beachland's role as part of the underground music community, our goal is to provide a venue for our visitors to discover surprising new cartoonist, and foster an environment for an open exchange of artwork, ideas, and dialogues. In addition to Genghis Con, the Beachland does have a Brunch that opens at 11am, and goes until 3pm, then the bar will be open, serving drinks and their regular menu until 11pm.
Admission to Genghis Con is still only $5. Further information, and a growing list of guests and exhibitors will be posted here at thegenghiscon.com as we start to announce this year's exhibitor list. This year's registration is closed, but if you are still interested in exhibiting and want to sign up for the wait list, you can do so HERE.

GENGHIS CON 2012
The Small Press Comic Convention, Genghis Con, returns to Cleveland on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, November 24th, 2012, from noon to 6 pm at the Beachland Ballroom at 15711 Waterloo Road Cleveland, OH 44110. This is the fourth year for the convention, which will bring artists, writers, cartoonists, and the best and brightest of the Rust Belt's independent comics scene together for a day of celebrating comics.
For the past three years Genghis Con has worked hard to establish the new tradition of having a Small Press and Alternative Print Media Convention in Cleveland that serves as a showcase and converging point for the talent and craftspeople of the region between Michigan, Western Pennsylvania, and all over Ohio. Focusing on the art and language of comics and visual storytelling has been, and always will be, the priority.
The Beachland Ballroom is the ideal setting for our objective of an open exchange of artwork, narratives, and ideas, as well as to buy, sell, and trade the mostly self-published, independent comics and zines. We are proud to foster an environment for attendees and patrons to be able to meet, chat with, and support their favorite local comic book artists. Much like The Beachland's role as part of the underground music community, our other objective is to provide a venue for our visitors to discover surprising new cartoonist they may not be hip to just yet.
Cleveland is a city steeped in tradition, both as a general rule and with a rich history of comics and storytelling. Genghis Con aims to channel that strength, and continue the legacy by making a contribution to promoting Cleveland as a cultural hot spot and destination for lovers of all things COMICS. Every year, the Saturday after Thanksgiving we'll be at The Beachland doing just that.
Out of consideration for literally everyone, we're keeping the admission price $5.
Further information, and a growing list of guests and exhibitors will be posted here at thegenghiscon.com as we start to fill this year's roster, and book the guests. Genghis Con also has a new tumblr over at http://genghisconcleveland.tumblr.com!
Anyone interested in exhibiting, please email genghisconcleveland@gmail.com, space is limited, but it's still available. We're mostly focused on independent, DIY, alternative comics and cartoonists that do graphic narratives and sequential art, but we're also open to writers, printmakers, zinesters, small press publishers, and practitioners of other forms of independent print media. The show is All Ages and family friendly, so please keep that in mind.

Genghis Con this weekend!
Firstly: big CONGRATS to Joyce Brabner and Justin Coulter, the organizer and artist of the Harvey Pekar Memorial Statue for achieving their Kickstarter goal. Which means that the statue will be built, but just because they met their goal, doesn't mean you can't still be a part of this awesome thing, get in on those awesome incentives, by donating even more money to the cause! It's an awesome awesome thing for the city and Harvey Pekar's legacy, and comics in general, but independent comics specifically.
Secondly, big thanks to the boys at the Comics Are GO! podcast, for having John G and Kevin Czap on to rap about Genghis Con, check out the Genghis Con special edition (posted on 11/11/11). Everybody had a great time, and I think we even said some halfway intelligent things about comics and the show! Though, engineer extraordinaire Matt Hess may not have said anything... he can be mysterious. At any rate, it's a fun podcast to listen to while you're drawing into the wee hours of the night.
I also want to add a note, especially for the out-of-towners coming in from parts unknown to attend Genghis Con at The Beachland, there are a plethora of shops on Waterloo to consider while you're here in the neighborhood. After you've had your mind blown by all the awesome exhibitors at Genghis Con, starting way down by East 156th is Arts Collinwood, The Head Shop and Cloud 9 (which I think is new-ish) ... right next door to the Beachland is the record store run by a cat named Vinyl (that's not slang, it's an actual cat!), Music Saves, and Native Cleveland, a store that sells little pieces of the actual city you can buy, then down a ways at E, 160th is the nostalgic nerdtopia Star Pop, packed to the gills with toys and stuff of yesteryear, then just little further is Blue Arrow Recordst and their boutique. If you've never been to Blue Arrow it's worth it just to check out the floor alone (it's made of record sleeves), but ON that floor they have an awesome selection of weird old underground comix and magazines and tons of the most oddball paperbacks and pulps, oh... and records! Waterloo is definitely a perfect place to spend the afternoon knocking out all your X-Mas shopping and walking off that T-Giving Feast.
Lastly, we wanted to link to the updated info about Carol & John's Comics big Black Friday Midnight Madness Sale/Party. If you're in town Friday night before the con, it's definitely a great thing to get into. They have a ton of independent comics they've got marked down to a buck, just thousands of comics. It's a pretty good time to get together and nerd out on some comics too. It's a pretty fun time! Kung Fu Bob will probably be playing cartoon music!
Okay, everybody, have a good holiday! Be thankful, eat food, and gear up in anticipation for the best Saturday of November! I'll probably be posting again before the show, so stay tuned!

Genghis Con 2011 Hypemobile

Another awesome poster for this year's show, this time by Kevin Fagan! A lot of Kevin's work looks like he's a complete and total acid casualty, but he's really not. In real life he's the most square and normal, average, everyday Cleveland Schmoe. That's why he's one of our heroes here at G.C. HQ.
Hey, but shout out to Frank Santoro over at The Comics Journal and Kevin Czap for writing that great Cleveland Comics Scene Report.
Big thanks to Mike SanGiacomo for the mention in this past Friday's Plain Dealer, you can check out the piece HERE. Check out some of Mike's comics, Tales of The Starlight Drive-In!
More updates coming in the next week or so. Stay tuned!
